Meteorology
| Another hobby of mine is
amateur meteorology. My current setup includes the Oregon
Scientific WMR-968, X-10 wireless camera and WeatherView32
software. The gauges and their solar powered |
| transmitters
are conveniently located at various points throughout my yard.
I've placed the X-10 camera on my shed where it broadcasts the
current visual weather conditions to a receiver hooked into my
server. I'm not entirely happy with this camera though, it tends
to flicker and does not give a good, consistent image. I plan on
replacing the camera itself eventually |

with a CCD video
camera (currently it's a CMOS type). This should give a much
better quality image. The CMOS was cheap, but you get what you pay
for. The WeatherView32 software works great and the response to
any modifications and bugs has been fast and effective. Dave
Heider, you da man! The WMR-918 is a new product and has a few
flaws of its own. I'm not very happy with Oregon Scientifics'
response and service. I'm currently waiting for a replacement
console, whose problem could be handled by a simple firmware upgrade, but
that's taken over a month - so far. After that, it'll be time to
get my defective rain gauge sending unit replaced. Or, maybe I'll
tell 'em to keep the whole thing and go buy a Davis unit instead. A
bit more expensive, but according to my buddy Joe Faria @ ,
it's well worth it. He's had very few problems and is quite happy
with it.
Update 1/2001:
I've replaced the WMR-918 with a replacement from Oregon
Scientific, the new WMR-968. I am much happier. Thanks to Dawn
@ OSI for her help in solving my problems. It seems to be a
much more stable system.
